At Military Grade, we care as much — if not more — about what goes into the structural components of a roof system as we do about how it looks from the street. Proper ventilation, underlayment, flashing details, fastening patterns, and moisture control matter just as much as the shingles themselves.
Adam Knutsen grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota, where hard work wasn’t optional — it was expected. To pay for college, he earned rodeo scholarships riding bareback broncs at Fort Scott Community College and later at South Dakota State University — Go Jackrabbits — where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree.
After college, Adam began his career in construction management with a national home builder, starting in customer care and advancing into land development project management. As his career progressed, he transitioned into commercial construction and development. In 2007, during the economic downturn, he was laid off — a moment that redirected his path.
With construction opportunities limited, Adam pursued a lifelong goal of serving his country. He spent five years full-time in the Army National Guard Aviation as a crew chief on a UH-60 Blackhawk, deploying to Kuwait, Jordan, and Slovakia. The military reinforced the discipline, accountability, and systems-based thinking that now define Military Grade.
In 2017, Adam and his wife made the decision to build something of their own — a business rooted in craftsmanship and long-term performance. Military Grade evolved from home renovations and new builds into a company focused on building envelope performance—roofing, insulation, and air-sealing systems designed to protect homes from the top down.
Today, Military Grade specializes in roofing systems that are installed the first time correctly, managed professionally, and built to perform under real-world conditions. Every project is approached with the same mindset Adam carried in the military: precision, preparation, and no shortcuts.
